A 4-Generation Home Nestled in the Mountains

This 4-generation home, located in the mountains, offers breathtaking river panoramas through its wrap-around style windows. The design team, Hsu Tzu Hung and Chou Hau Ting, transformed two structural pillars into multi-faced marble installations that seamlessly blend with the magnificent river vistas. The different shades of the color scheme invite natural light and create a painting-like scenery within the unit.

To find a balance for individuals of all generations, the bedrooms are grouped together in the wings. The grandparents and in-laws' rooms are located at the ends of private hallways in the wings, providing privacy and convenience. The open-concept common area easily accommodates several groups of people, fostering socialization and connection.

The design team employed the owners' cherished marble to create the multi-faced installations, giving the pillars a grand character that matches the river vistas. The warm feeling and straight lines of the wooden grate create an appealing contrast with the marble, adding a touch of elegance to the space.

Diatomaceous earth in the walls, wardrobes, and ceiling reduces the humidity of the mountain air, ensuring a comfortable living environment. Storage spaces are customized according to each inhabitant's preferences, maximizing functionality and convenience. Additionally, the broad entrance and low threshold of the shared washroom accommodate wheelchair accessibility.

This design is a modern example of a 4-generation residence, merging scenic beauty and Feng-Shui principles to fulfill the needs for socializing and privacy. The open-concept layout allows for unobstructed views, while the artistic potential of marble echoes the natural beauty outside.

The project started in June 2019 in Taipei and was completed in December. Extensive research on Feng-Shui principles was conducted to create a comfortable, functional, and access-friendly home that caters to the needs of each family member. The design team overcame creative and technical challenges to transform the pillars into powerful art installations, showcasing their expertise and attention to detail.

This exceptional design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2022 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. The award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
